Hello again,
I am planning a project but would like some quick advice. I am dressing an oversized slider (four panels of glass) that is topped with a cathedral window. I envisioned board mounted swags on the angles of the cathedral and stationery panels flanking the doors. It (the swags on the angle) is possible isn't it? Anything special I should know? I am picturing some sort of elongated swag. Is this when I should buy Ann's book?
Thanks, Denise Soisson

Here’s another angle on this situation: although I am a professional
artist, my sister cannot draw a straight line with a ruler! Every
time she has made a decorating change to her home, she has asked me
to be present to hear what the designer/painter/wallpaper hanger has
to offer. I am always willing to help but I try to always let my
sister & her husband make the final choices - after all, they have to
live with the results. But it gives her confidence to have me there
to ask questions she doesn’t even think about.
So, sometimes another person who is present at the meeting is
just there to offer support to an unconfident person. I would never
assume they are just there as a pest. Hope this helps. . .

Thanks for the funny stories! Colleen, I can't even imagine how you managed
to recover from the shock of your client's neighbor moving in to enjoy the
drapes she helped select!! And, Dian, yes, a "town hall meeting" does seem
like a necessity for some, doesn't it?!
Just nice to hear others' experiences too!!
Thanks,
Nicole

A signal of insecure clients??? Kinda like "Does this make me look fat?"...Hmmmm...loaded questions.
The neighbor usually comes around on the initial visit...The next time I speak with the client I have a little heart to heart: "You know, this is YOUR house and you need to choose what YOU like. What I have found when neighbors "help", you will end up with what the neighbor wants and not what YOU want. I won't let you make a mistake...I'll walk you through. We'll do it together"...And another good sales tool: Always have three good reasons why they need what you are trying to get them to buy...You know: the color is perfect to pick up that flower in the couch, and the curve of the treatment mirrors the shape of the back of the chair, and it draws the eye away from....If you give them enough reasons to say yes, no gets harder...and they have ammunition to use on the neighbor!
Family is harder: power struggles that have nothing to do with draperies are often involved. I still try the same heart to heart!

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can suggest where to go for a very heavy duty
traverse rod with rings. The fabric is a chenille and quite heavy.
Thanks for any ideas,

Try the Ultra Estate Rods from Kirsch...Available with or without rings. Pricey, but worth it...

I'll second that, Beth. Once the client uses that rod, they love it! I try
to order mine from companies that do not charge for delivery since the size
often exceeds UPS regs. (I'm using Lafayette for these.)

Denise - Swags on a slanted board are very definitely doable. Either one
long swag or several.
As for the book, it addresses level symmetrical swags. But it might provide
the groundwork you need to let me help you work thru the patterns for the
slanted swags. That is a chapter in the next book. That chapter is pretty
much finished, but the rest of the book is not quite done yet. I'd be glad
to help you thru this process. You can contact me privately at
akjworkroom@comcast.net, or, if DraperyPro members are interested, we can
work thru the process publically.
Good luck.

I tried to locate a photo of Ori Katzen's swags that he did over a wide area,
but I couldn't put my hands on the photo...maybe it was in D&WC mag, WF mag,
or Cheryl Strickland's Sew What newsletter...I'm thinking the latter.
Anyway, he reduced the sizes of the swags as they lowered. So if he had 5
swags, each was reduced slightly from the top, then the next one slightly
smaller...you get the idea.)Visually they worked out to fool the eye. I would
definitely use my Minutes Matter Studio Program to get a true scaled drawing of the
sizes you would need. I can't think of a better way to visualize and get a true
scale to work from.
Minutes Matter offers a 30 day free trial for Studio if you don't have it.

I think the process of doing angled swags is that you make the swag as if it
is normal, then find out where it falls if the angled dustboard is behind. The
excess is discarded. I don't think you would actually tilt the swag itself,
otherwise it would hang weird. Does that made sense? If you disagree with this
idea, please let me know!

Ann,
Thanks for your encouragement and information. The project is still in its infancy as I will have an appointment with the client in mid August. In my mind I see several swags on the slanted board but will gather all the measurements and the deposit before I gather any more details!! Thanks for your prompt response and I will contact you privately about the book/s. Denise

Hi All,
Window Fashions Regional Show is coming to Chicago, IL, August 22, 23, 2005.
I highly recommend you attend. I've attended the last 4 or so and always come
back with lots of information. I even started doing work for a designer that
I met at the most recent show in Palm Springs, CA, and she's terrific! If you
are a workroom and want to expand your business, or a designer looking for
another workroom (sometimes just to back up your existing) this is a great
opportunity to network.
If you are a WCAA member, you get HALF OFF the registration fee if you attend
both days. That's a terrific deal; one you may not have been aware of.
I know Window Fashions isn't out with a mega phone announcing the discounted
price, but hey, that's where I can come in! I know it's always nice to save
some money, and this is a great deal. If you aren't a member of WCAA, and want
to join, you can do that too... www.wcaa.org Even though we don't have a
chapter in So. CA where I am, the coupons alone are a great value!
For more information on the WF Regional Show, visit www.expoquestions.com
Regional show is also going to:
September 12-13, Richmond, VA
September 26-27, Jacksonville, FL
October 10-11, Pittsburgh, PA

Denise,
In looking for a photo in Window Fashions Magazine for my designer, I
stumbled upon the photo of Ori's angled swags. It's on page 50 of the May 2004
issue. I can't believe I found it!
